Outdoor Instuments

With around 30 years experience in music education, I can wholeheartedly recommend music making in all its forms.  It increases brain flexibility, and therefore learning ability, it teaches us subtly advanced ways of social interaction and co-operation, and is spiritually and emotionally fulfilling.  It's also great fun!  Making music outdoors really is the cherry on the cake.  Schools are increasingly realising the benefits of outdoor learning as the continuing growth of the Forest School movement demonstrates.

I have been making and playing outdoor instruments for many years, for my own enjoyment and that of my students.  In the current climate, when traditional musical activities are not always easy to manage, outdoors really is the way to go!  My activities are mainly aimed at schools and Forest School groups, but I will happily design and build instruments on a smaller scale for individuals - by all means get in touch and we can discuss your ideas.  There are a number of excellent firms who make and supply outdoor instruments using very high quality materials that will last a lifetime, but often the costs can be prohibitive.  My philosophy is based around simple and robust build methods and materials that are far more affordable and realistic for many schools and organisations.

I can offer a variety of possible approaches -

  • Full or half day workshops with small groups (around 15 at a time) – I bring and set up outdoor instruments at your location. Fun and engaging music making in the open air!
  • CPD for your staff – hands on, inspiring and uplifting training and encouragement for your team using my instruments.
  • I can build and install instruments for your setting, from small-group sets to a full "gamelan".
  • If you or your team have musical leanings and are fairly practical, I can even train them to build their own instruments!

Get in touch via the Contact page to explore any of the above in more detail, or take a look at the Videos page to see the instruments in action!
